Goodreads Summary (click here for the link).
For almost two years now, Kiera’s boyfriend, Denny, has been everything she’s ever wanted: loving, tender and endlessly devoted to her. When they head off to a new city to start their lives together, Denny at his dream job and Kiera at a top-notch university, everything seems perfect. Then an unforeseen obligation forces the happy couple apart.
Feeling lonely, confused, and in need of comfort, Kiera turns to an unexpected source—a local rock star named Kellan Kyle. At first, he’s purely a friend that she can lean on, but as her loneliness grows, so does their relationship. And then one night everything changes… and none of them will ever be the same.
Who am I to judge? No one.
Yes, this book is about cheating. Kiera cheated on her boyfriend, Denny, with his good friend Kellan. She is confused, alone and finds comfort in Kellan. Kellan, who is portrayed as the kind of guy that makes you swoony and drooly. The kind of guy who could pop your bra open just by looking at it. Of course, Kiera was going to fall for him if he showed interest! And truthfully, she was cheating on Denny wayyy before the drunken sex.
The cheating doesn’t bother me. We’re all humans and we were born to make mistakes. There are 3 main characters, each contributing to the situation. Denny who decides to work overseas without really consulting his girlfriend Kiera and leaves her behind in a new city. Kellan who after being with girls after girls after girls and after girls … finally feels something that he has never felt before. Except she’s his friend’s girl. And Kiera who gets herself caught in a web of confusion and lies so deep that she doesn’t know to distinguish the right from the wrong anymore.
I can understand the way she handled the situation. Scared of letting go of what is supposed to be right, safe, and expected to take a risk on something you have no power on. This scenario isn’t unfamiliar. Throughout history, many women suffered in silence rather than have the courage to let go and face uncertainty. In this story though, they got caught and had to face the consequences.
After all these years of first reading this book, I can still remember how tension-filled it is. The way Kiera-Kellan grew closer, the forbidden moves, the sex (coffee stand), the fight, the reconciliation. The author made it a point to show how much passion was between Kiera-Kellan compared to the blandness of Kiera-Denny, which tells us how much power passion has in relationships.
“I think in the end, you would have stayed with me, out of obligation…or maybe comfort. Maybe I was safe to you, and you needed to feel that. I know how scared you get of the unknown. To you…I must be kind of a security blanket. Do you see now, how that doesn’t work for me? I don’t want to be there, simply because the idea of me being gone is too…scary. I want to be someone’s everything. I want fire and passion, and love that’s returned, equally. I want to be someone’s heart… Even if it means breaking my own.”
