Italy in my Plate

Hey guys! The days are getting longer here with each passing day and the weather is getting warmer. In about a month and a half, it will be summer after all. And in the summer, I don’t like to eat that much. I like to stock up on salad ingredients. But eating salad every day can also get old after a while, so I try to come up with different ideas. Today, I thought I would prepare an Italian-themed plate.

Fraisier (my first time!!)

Personally, I am not much a dessert-person. In a restaurant, I will most likely choose a starter over a dessert most times. If I ever do choose a dessert, it will most probably be something with chocolate during « that time of the month ». When I was living in the Philippines, I had a lot of difficulty with local desserts. In fact, I can’t decide what my favorite Filipino dessert is. I usually would go with a platter of fresh fruits. Oh yeah, Philippines Mango are one of the best things ever! In France however, I do have a little weakness for the Fraisier.

Cooking Asian Dishes

 

The month of January was supposed to be a wonderful month (before I got ill). Earlier in the month, I had challenged myself to try to cook and prepare Asian dishes Filipino-Style for every meal, or at least for dinner. What does Filipino-style mean you might ask? If you ever have the opportunity with Filipinos, you will quickly notice that a Filipino meal consists of not 1 but 2 (and even 3 or more) different dishes! The challenge is to mix and match the flavors. I know what you will say next – isn’t 3 dishes a bit too much? Yes, of course! The idea is not to force yourself and finish everything. Whatever is left will be eaten the next meal, which means that if there’s a lot of leftovers, you will only need to cook 1 dish. One important thing to remember about Filipinos is to never throw away food. In a country with a high poverty rate, every single piece of meat or fish is important! Even leftover rice will be turned to garlic fried rice or Cantonese fried rice.

La Galette des Rois

 

If you think you can go on a diet right after the Christmas / New Year break, think again. The first weekend of the year celebrates Epiphany, which marks the day the 3 Kings – Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthasar – came to visit Baby Jesus and in France we eat the famous Galette des Rois or the French King’s Cake. The Galette des Rois is traditionally made of flaky buttery puff pastry and filled with a Frangipane, a creamy almond mixture. Nowadays, you will notice that a lot of Boulangerie / Patisserie like to mix and match new flavors for their Galette des Rois. I like to stick strictly to tradition because I love frangipane!

When I first got into blogging many many many years ago, it was all about food! I was writing about recipes, products, kitchen tools, and etc … When I started this blog, I wanted to include other aspects of my life. As much as I love cooking (which is a real passion of mine), I also love travelling, fashion, books, movies and series, and arts! I thought it would be a good idea to have more of a lifestyle blog. This has been more of a diary for me and I love being able to go back and read!
